Chapter Nine
It was several days later that John was working in the depot of his company, preparing some demonstration boards for an exhibition the following week, when he received a phone call.
The call was from the policeman he had met at Thomas’s chamber up in London, Detective Sergeant Bill White, or ‘Chalky’ as everyone knew him.
Chalky exchanged pleasantries and then said that he would like to meet up with him, along with a colleague, a certain MI5 Officer named Henderson and John was intrigued when he was asked to keep the meeting, and the name of the officer in the strictest confidence. He was told however, that Thomas Barrington would be put in the picture eventually but for the time being he must not divulge any details to a third party.
Henderson had apparently asked that the meeting be kept low key so they arranged to meet up at a village pub not far from where John was staying.
At lunchtime on the following Saturday therefore, all three men met at the Full Moon Inn.
When John entered the lounge bar he spotted Chalky sat at one of the tables near the window, along with a gentleman dressed in a sports jacket who he assumed to be Henderson.
After initially introducing John to his colleague, Chalky said that he was present only for the introduction and that he would be taking very much a back seat in any future activity.
‘Future activity’? thought John, wondering what it was that could possibly include him; for although Barrington had told him that Mullins was under some form of surveillance he had no idea how serious his alleged crimes could be.
Henderson addressed John in a low voice.
“My name is Leonard Henderson... Leo, and I would first like to thank you for agreeing to this meeting. I believe Thomas Barrington has already briefed you on why you have been asked to curtail any leave for appeal for the time being although I appreciate that you have not been provided with much information.”
Chalky intervened. “Please forgive my manners” and, handing round a menu card said “tell me what you want for lunch. I’ll order and get some drinks from the bar.” He then took the two men’s orders and walked over to where hot food was on display, and from where a tempting aroma spread across the room.
Henderson continued. “We have been watching Mr Mullins and his two colleagues for some time now and have established that they are involved in a number of serious crimes. Incidentally, before I go any further, we will be offering evidence at your appeal as to your innocence as we now know that you were not involved in the fatal shooting some seven years ago.”
Chalky returned from the bar with three drinks and placed them on the table. He sat down and took a sip of his drink.
“Have you mentioned to John about clearing his name at any subsequent appeal?” he asked.
